Many people live by the assumption that their loveable pet would never bite, and we are often very trusting when it comes to our furry four-legged friends. However, dogs, whether we know them or not, are just like any other animal and they have the potential to bite. A dog bite can cause bruising, break or puncture the skin and even crush bones.
Treatment therefore depends on the severity of the bite, however, it must be noted that even a mild dog bite can lead to serious infection if the wound is not cleansed properly. Symptoms of an infection may include a fever, swelling, increased pain and sensitivity of the affected area and redness around the bite.
In addition, anyone bitten by an unvaccinated dog (or a dog that is not their own) should seek immediate medical treatment where a rabies vaccine will be administered. Rabies is a potentially fatal disease, spread by rabid animals - a condition that needs immediate medical attention before symptoms develop. |
