Head Lice Causes

Head lice are very contagious, and sharing personal belongings such as combs, brushes, towels, pillows or hats with others who have head lice puts you at risk. Head-to-head contact with someone who is infested with lice also makes you more susceptible to it.

Many people believe that if you have head lice you are dirty or unhygienic but this is simply not true! It can happen to anyone no matter how impeccable their personal hygiene is. Head lice typically affect children aged between 3 to 12 years of age and their families. If not treated immediately, head lice can cause skin irritation and infection.

Head Lice Symptoms

1. Frequent itching and scratching of the hair
2. Sores or small, red bumps on the scalp, neck and shoulders
3. Nits (lice eggs) that appear as tiny, white, clear or oval-shaped dots (that sit at an angle) on the hair shaft

Tips for Head Lice

1. Wash bed linen, towels and clothing in hot water used by the person with head lice
2. Vacuum your child’s car seat, carpets, couches and stuffed toys
3. Avoid head-head contact with other children
4. Avoid sharing person items such as brushes, combs, toothbrushes, towels, hats, barrettes, hair ties, caps, and scarves
5. Encourage your child not to lie on bed linen and pillows that have been used by others with lice
6. Soak hair items such as brushes, combs, hair bands, bandanas in hot water or rubbing oil

Head Lice Home Remedies

1. Guava (Amrud) leaves grinded and mixed with Turmeric applied on the scalp 2 hrs before taking bath helps in getting rid of head lice.
2. Neem leaves grinded and applied on the scalp 2 hours before taking bath helps in getting rid of head lice.
3. Half spoon of Black pepper (Kali mirch) powder and one cup Curd mixed with two spoons of Lemon Juice applied on the scalp 20 minutes before taking bath destroys head lice completely but remember to close eyes while taking bath as Black pepper can cause irritation to the eyes.
4. Rubbing a lemon piece on the scalp or applying Lemon juice with Coconut oil before taking bath helps to destroy head lice completely.
5. Beet root leaves boiled and squeezed and this squeezed water applied on the scalp before taking bath destroys head lice.
6. Rubbing boiled White goose foot (Bathua leaves) on the scalp 20 minutes before taking bath destroys head lice.
7. Garlic kills lices as it is pungent. Garlic paste mixed with Lemon juice applied on the scalp before taking bath destroys head lice.
8. Basil (Tulsi) leaves grinded with neem leaves applied on the scalp before taking bath destroys head lice.
9. Putting Neem leaves and Basil leaves under the pillow helps to overcome hair lice problem.
10. You can make your own hair oil like this.: Boil Neem leaves, Basil leaves, Gooseberry (Amla), Cloves (Laung), In Coconut oil and this can be used regularly to avoid all hair related problems.
